Dental questions don’t always come up when you’re sitting in the dental chair.
Sometimes it’s a small change you notice while brushing. Sometimes it’s sensitivity that appears only when you drink something cold. Or perhaps you’ve been wondering whether your child’s brushing routine is really enough.
At Victor Crescent Dental Clinic, we believe understanding your oral health is an important part of good dental care.
That’s why we’ve created Ask Dr Susan a simple place to find answers to the questions our patients commonly ask.
Dr Susan George, Principal Dentist at Victor Crescent Dental Clinic, shares practical guidance on everyday dental concerns, preventive care, children’s oral health, dental emergencies and treatment options.
Have a dental question?
Browse the questions below to learn more about common dental concerns.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding gums can be associated with plaque build-up and gum inflammation, although there can be several possible causes. If your gums bleed regularly when you brush or floss, it is worth discussing this with your dentist rather than assuming it is normal.
Why are my teeth sensitive to cold drinks?
Cold sensitivity can have different causes, including enamel wear, exposed tooth surfaces, gum recession, decay and other dental conditions. If sensitivity continues or becomes more noticeable, a dental examination can help identify the cause.
Can I have a cavity without having a toothache?
Yes. Tooth decay does not always cause noticeable pain in its early stages. This is one reason regular dental examinations can be important, even when your teeth feel completely normal.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
The right interval depends on your individual oral health, dental history and risk factors. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all schedule, your dentist can recommend an appointment frequency that is appropriate for you.
What should I do if I am nervous about visiting the dentist?
Let your dental team know. Dental anxiety is common, and telling your dentist about your concerns gives the team an opportunity to explain the appointment, answer your questions and help you feel more comfortable.
When should tooth pain be checked?
Tooth pain that is persistent, recurring or becoming more severe should be assessed by a dentist. Pain can have different causes, and an examination can help determine what is happening and whether treatment is needed.
When should I seek urgent dental care?
Significant swelling, severe dental pain, uncontrolled bleeding, a knocked-out tooth or serious dental trauma may require urgent dental assessment. If swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
